Counter Culture Records

counter-cultureIf we look back a few decades, its not too hard to figure out why there wasn’t a single indie label working consistently with Indian bands. There was no original content, which would make the existence of labels obsolete. At the same time, it could have been the absence of a label that failed to inspire the original music movement in the 80’s and 90’s in India. We figured, we’d never find out the answer till we tried … and someone had to do it! This was the founding thought behind CCR.

After a few years of working P&D deals with major labels, OML had its share of successes and failures with their albums. What was common was the apathy seen in the industry towards indie acts. We started Counter Culture Records as an alternative to the major labels. A place where indie bands could get creative freedom and we could help them get their music across to their fans. We started slow, working with our in-house bands. Pentagram’s “Its OK, Its All Good” was the first album we released in January 2007. It made it to the top of the album charts for 6 weeks. We knew we were doing something right.

We released 7 more albums in 2007 and 2008 and with each album we got better at what we do. Our distribution was pretty widespread, our low-cost marketing methods became more and more effective and slowly we were in a position to invest in emerging artists. We actively decided not to limit ourselves to any genre, and with an open mind worked with artists - from rock to heavy metal to folk to jazz.

CCR albums are distributed in over 100 stores, across all mobile networks and online in India and on cdbaby.com.

We are always looking for new talent we can work with, and we hope you will get in touch with us.
